Transform what Classic Theater can be

“has fundamentally transformed how I teach”

Your gift of any size makes a difference - so that classic plays written by women are taught in classrooms around the world.

At Chapman University, Expand the Canon has transformed Professor Nick Gabriel's classroom.

"My education was rigorous and fulfilling, but it did not include exposure to "classic" plays written by women. Although I love the playwrights whose work is most widely studied by students of acting, several years ago I recognized that my own students yearned for a more diverse, more equitable representation among those whose plays I assigned.  Determined to provide my students with an even better educational experience than I had myself, I undertook about five minutes of internet research and came upon Expand The Canon.  ETC has enlarged the selection of classic plays my students have access to and it has fundamentally transformed how I teach. My students' understanding of Shakespeare, Molière, Shaw, and Coward is deepened and enhanced by their exposure to Brand, Ukrainka, Hurston, and Yamauchi. Some of my students are gratified and inspired to see themselves reflected in the works they're asked to research and perform. Others begin taking a wider view of the world by experiencing it through lenses that are unfamiliar to them.My hope is that reframing lesser-known plays as classics will increase the probability that they will be revived in productions around the world. The plays that ETC finds and uplifts deserve more attention than they have received. And I'm honored to serve this important organization that is providing academia and the industry of theatre vital access to high-quality plays that are important, worthy of study, and that set a standard against which others ought to be judged."

- Nick Gabriel, Assistant Professor of Acting, Chapman University
