First readings of the new season!

Join us in celebrating the next phase of Expand the Canon –– with 2 amazing partners, 16 newly-added titles, and 3 ways to engage in the celebration.

1. Happy Hour at the Expand the Canon 2024 List Launch!

Toast with us –– we’ll reveal the 16 plays added to the Expand the Canon list this year! For the first time, we’re highlighting shorter and one-act plays by historic women and gender-expansive writers. And as always: they’re classics!

From there, take a quick 8-minute walk to go see these plays in action, at: 1. The Public, for the last reading of a full-length from our 2023 List, or2. Classic Stage Company, for two readings of the short plays you’ll have just heard about!

1.

A reading of Ntozake Shange’s

Spell #7

Back to where it first premiered at The Public Theater, Spell #7 gets a beautiful exploration lead by Ann James with an incredible cast of alumni from The Acting Company.

2.

Readings of 2 short plays that sparked this list!

Classic Stage Company has chosen works by three ETC writers –– and two of them are titles straight from our new list! Discover which Alice Childress and Josefina Niggli plays made us commit to a year of short-but-excellent plays.

Expand the Canon is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, the NYSCA-A.R.T./New York Creative Opportunity Fund (A Statewide Theatre Regrant Program), and the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).
