February Partner
Want to hear the play?! Island Shakespeare Festival, the first theatre to commit to producing 3 years of Expand the Canon plays, is delving into a reading of this hilarious text!

Some of our favorite quotes from New System of Freedom:
“I am suffering physical and spiritual exhaustion from the drama of my life.”
“Well, proper company depresses me, so I suppose I shall have to stay with you.”
“In this age of freedom, a lady should be able to be abducted, if she has a mind to be!”

Charlotte von Stein
(1742-1827) was a prominent figure in the Weimar Court and enjoyed moderate literary success in her later life.
She had a decade-long affair with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the most influential writers in the German language. Goethe composed several poems in Charlotte’s honor and modeled characters in his works after her.
