Now Presenting: The 2023 Expand the Canon List
As the world celebrates the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s folio, we are excited to share our own collection of 36 plays, celebrating 350 years of women playwrights. We’re also proud that our call to action – for theatres to embrace the legacies of women and non-binary writers through history – is being answered. This year we have 7 stellar partner companies highlighting this year’s 9 plays!

Today, we add 9 more plays to our celebrated classics:
The Favorite Minister (1664)Verse play about the transactional nature of relationships, which was the first play by a woman performed for King Louis XIV
Adelinda (1796)Irreverent class comedy with a gritty female lead
A New System of Freedom (1798)Madcap Comedy of Errors with chaotic Gen-Z wit
The Sons of Erin (1812)Plot-twist-filled farce with bold schemes to fight prejudice
The Verge (1921)The lyric insight of Virginia Woolf meets the electric cruelty of Hedda Gabler
Heaven Challenges (1943)Dramedy about reframing your life & learning to fall in love (with yourself) again
Day of the Swallows (1971)Lush, poetic drama with a powerhouse queer heroine and an intersectional view of indigeneity
Mother of 1084 (1973)Whirling political drama centering a mother’s feminist awakening
Spell #7 (1979)Ensemble-lead choreopoem that explores the Black experience in the entertainment industry
