#FBF - The beginnings of Expand the Canon

“Expand the Canon is the most important project I’ve worked on in my career. I am deeply proud to be creating the future of theatre history.” - Emily Lyon, Artistic Director
How did it begin?
Since 2012, Hedgepig Ensemble Theatre has always approached classics with a feminist perspective. “What does that mean?” - you may ask. That meant hiring women creative teams, and working hard to find the humanization in women characters.
Somewhere around 2019, it dawned on us that our plays tended to be written by folks named Bill, Eugene, Fred, and Harold. A quick Google Search taught us that there were thousands of classic plays by women…but not much more. Most of these plays had no production history, and no information available aside from a playwright and title.

We wanted to produce those plays, but didn’t know which ones.
That’s when we decided to read ALL THE PLAYS: the good and the bad.

Now in it’s fourth year, our Expand the Canon Play Database has over 5,000 titles- and we read 250 of these plays each year.
Come September, www.expandthecanon.com will host a resource for 36 timely plays by women, including synopses and information on how to produce them.
